- PROJECT: A role-playing book with an original setting.
- ROLE: Developed backstory and world; wrote lore and character vignettes.
- SKILLS: Collaborative creative writing; player-driven worldbuilding; crowdfunding principles.
Comets & Cockpits is an original space fantasy setting, published under the Open Game License, and built on the 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons ruleset. I was invited to write a chapter’s worth of cosmology, lore, and backstory for the setting, in addition to small environmental vignettes that would set the tone and mood of the world.
Writ large in the fire of celestial orbs, the works, both great and terrible, of the Scepter of Ascension were recounted for all to see and generations to remember.
International and diverse, the team consisted of two dozen writers, designers, artists, and editors working closely together over the course of four months. A few weeks after the first round of production had concluded, and after drumming up interest on social media platforms, the project was launched on Kickstarter – and promptly funded in less than 100 minutes. Over the following month, nearly 1000 people pledged to make the role-playing books a reality, with the project being funded thirteen timers over its initial goal. Every available stretch goal was unlocked, allowing for additional content, including more original artwork and bespoke adventure modules.
At time of writing, the first book of Comets & Cockpits – Geographica Adelphos – has been released on DriveThruRPG, with the second – Technologica Epoch – still in production. You can read a small sample of my contribution to the project below.
